Growing as a Teacher
As you desire to improve and consistently work to teach in a way that is pleasing to Father in Heaven, He will inspire you in your preparation, strengthen your relationships with students, magnify your efforts in the classroom, and bless you with His Spirit to more fully accomplish His work. He will also help you see areas where you can progress as you strive to teach in a way that leads students to deepen their conversion to Jesus Christ and His restored gospel. Time during the summer and when classes are not in session are valuable opportunities for you to improve and prepare. Here are some principles and practices you might follow to prioritize and plan for summer.
Live:
· Seek to understand and more fully incorporate the Objective of Seminaries and Institutes into your personal efforts. (See the diagram above)
· Focus on improving your performance, knowledge, attitude, and character as a teacher.
· Prayerfully study the scriptures, words of living prophets, and direction of S&I leadership.
Teach:
· Study Teaching in the Savior’s Way.
· Become familiar with the seminary curriculum. Begin with the Seminary Curriculum Training
· Begin preparing lessons for the class you will teach.
· Use Improving as a Christlike Teacher- A Personal Evaluation to assess your needs.
· Prepare the location where you will teach (What are things you can do now so you are ready for the first day? Let your Stake Supervisor or Coordinator know in advance).
· Participate in training offered by your coordinator and/or stake supervisor (July 17, 31, and Aug 7. Zoom from 7-8AM)
Lead:
· Work with stake and ward leaders to invite youth to participate in seminary. This is probably one of the most important things you can do over the next two months. If each potential student in your class could receive a person invitation, I know that it can begin to help students feel like they belong. Studies show that students who have a connection with a teacher are much more likely to be involved in seminary. again, this is one of the most important things you can do in the summer months.
